The Journey of a Data Scientist: Challenges and Triumphs

Dr. Daniel Koh, CEO of Koh & Associates

- Daniel, thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. Could you tell us about your background in data science?

My data science work has spanned numerous areas, from data extraction and transformation to analysis and visualization.  In my previous roles, I had the opportunity to work with clients across borders, extracting data from diverse locations like Paris, London, and the United States. This global perspective has been instrumental in developing comprehensive solutions that address the multifaceted needs of my clients.

I specialize in data visualization and analysis. For instance, I have worked with the Singapore government on a data visualization project during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, I've been involved in data engineering projects, extracting data from various formats such as XML and JSON. These projects demanded a strong understanding of data transformation and structuring to ensure the data was usable for further analysis and reporting. My combined experience in both engineering and visualization allows me to handle the entire data pipeline, from raw data extraction to creating visual tools that drive business and policy decisions.

- Can you share an example of a particularly challenging data engineering project you've encountered?

One memorable project involved a Paris-based company that heavily utilized big data. They had over 100 databases, each containing numerous tables. Navigating this vast data landscape required meticulous attention to detail. We had to create a data dictionary, define table structures, and analyze millions of tables to determine which ones to combine for optimal analysis. A key challenge was striking a balance between data integration and resource management, as combining large datasets demands significant computing power and incurs substantial costs for the client.

- You've worked with both government agencies and private companies. How did you secure these projects?

In Singapore, securing government projects often involves participating in a competitive bidding process based on factors like cost, capabilities, and skills. This can be demanding, especially when competing with larger, more established companies.

Prior to starting my own company, I worked as a data science consultant for DXC (formerly HP Enterprise), where I was assigned to a government project for a ministry during the COVID-19 pandemic. My role involved consolidating and presenting crucial data to aid in managing the pandemic response. It was a high-pressure situation requiring swift action, and I ended up working tirelessly for 48 hours to deliver the necessary data insights.

When it comes to commercial projects, networking has been essential. Over the years, I've built strong relationships within the industry, allowing me to connect with potential clients organically. Rather than directly pitching services, I focus on showcasing my capabilities and expertise, emphasizing how I can add value to their endeavors.

The Japanese Market: Trust and Long-Term Relationships are Key to Success

IMG_0457_ka3

- How does this approach differ in Japan, where you're currently based?

My experience in Japan has highlighted the significance of building trust and fostering long-term relationships in the business world. Japanese culture values personal connections, and taking the time to cultivate genuine relationships has been crucial in establishing trust and credibility.

- Many Japanese companies recognize the potential of data science and AI but struggle to articulate their specific needs or identify the right experts to consult. What advice would you give them?

I encourage Japanese companies to engage in open conversations with data science professionals, even if their understanding of their data needs is still evolving. Often, companies have a general idea of what they want to achieve but may lack the technical vocabulary to express it in data science terms. Data scientists can help bridge this gap by actively listening to their concerns and translating them into actionable data-driven solutions.

- What initially drew you to the Japanese market?

Gaining the trust of Japanese people takes time and effort, but the relationships forged are incredibly valuable. This aligns with my long-term business perspective, which prioritizes cultivating enduring connections over quick gains.

While Japan has a rich and deeply rooted culture distinct from Singapore's, I find our values to be quite compatible. This resonance in values makes it easier to establish mutual understanding and build trust compared to my experiences in other advanced economies like the US, UK, or France.

Navigating Japan's Business Landscape with O-BIC's Support

- Could you elaborate on your experience with O-BIC's support program for foreign businesses entering Japan?

When I first arrived in Japan, I faced challenges introducing myself as a data scientist from Singapore due to the language barrier. To overcome this, I decided to create a website to showcase my skills and services. Through this endeavor, I met a web developer who introduced me to O-BIC.

O-BIC's support has been invaluable in navigating the intricacies of setting up a business in Japan. They connected me with a lawyer who guided me through the company formation process. They also facilitated my participation in networking events, providing opportunities to connect with potential clients and partners.

- Finally, what advice would you give to foreign companies considering expanding into Japan?

Embrace Long-Term Relationship Building: Recognize that Japanese business culture emphasizes long-term relationships and trust-building. Be prepared to invest time and effort in cultivating genuine connections.

Prioritize Networking: Networking is paramount in Japan. Actively seek opportunities to connect with other businesses and individuals in your industry.

Learn the Language and Respect Cultural Norms: While not essential, making an effort to learn the language and understand Japanese business etiquette demonstrates respect and fosters stronger relationships.

Be Patient and Adaptable: The Japanese business landscape may differ from what you're accustomed to. Be patient, adaptable, and willing to learn and adapt to local customs.

Editor's Note

We had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Daniel Koh, a data scientist originally from Singapore.

Mr. Koh has worked globally, but we were struck by his strong interest in the Japanese market and his deep understanding of Japanese culture. What particularly resonated with us was his emphasis on the importance of "trust" in Japanese business culture.

We believe this is a crucial attitude, especially in the field of data science, which can sometimes be complex and highly specialized. Building trust enables deeper mutual understanding with clients and facilitates collaborative problem-solving.

His firsthand experience with OBIC's support program also provides valuable insights for foreign companies looking to enter the Japanese market.

We are excited to see Mr. Koh's future endeavors and the streng

thening collaboration between Japan and Singapore in the field of data science.
